Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group understands precisely where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and fled to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their status as important members in the influential clan could enable the group reach places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the setting for a multiple motives, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to travel to the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Explorers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
